DIAMOND AND CBN MOUNTED WHEELS

Internal grinding is one of the most tricky of all grinding applications. In no other type of grinding can the entire range of factors change from one job to the next. Therefore, it is necessary to consider the specifics of each job separately in order to arrive at the best suited wheel for the job. In order to get the most out of tool life and production,  choosing the correct wheel for a job is very important. Unfortunately, this isn't always the easiest decision to make, as many factors play into such a selection. What is the material, size of area to be ground, amount of stock to be removed, finish required, machine capabilities and a number of other factors.

HOLE SIZE TO BE GROUND
In the case of Super abrasive internal grinding, the wheel is generally 40-60% the size of the hole diameter being ground. Larger diameter holes will require a lower percentage, while smaller holes require a greater percentage (see illustrations). The depth of the hole determines the length of the abrasive as well as the undercut (if required) and the overall length of the mandrel (abrasive length + shank length). The other basic variable to be considered in wheel size is shank diameter, and that is determined by the size of the collet, or simply by choosing the stiffest shank that will fit reasonably with the wheel diameter. In most cases, if the wheel diameter is smaller or equivalent in size to the shank diameter, an undercut may be required behind the wheel for needed clearance
GRIT SIZE SELECTION

Finally,  the grit of the wheel can be determined. This is accomplished by considering the median between stock removal and finish desired. A coarse grit will be more aggressive, but will consequently leave a rough finish, while the opposite is true for a finer grit. Braemar has experience working with grits as coarse as 30/40 and as fine as 2,000, so arriving at a figure to suit the need of individual customers is a commonplace operation.
RESIN BOND

Light Brown or green in color.  Cutting Speed: 4,000 to 6,500 S.F.P.M.  Wheels shipped ready to use Wheels should be indicated within .0005" T.I.R. prior to grinding. May be trued with nibs designed for super abrasives followed by a dressing stick.  Braemar resin bond wheels will give you superior performance in a wide variety of applications where stock removal, and surface finishes is needed.
VITRIFIED BOND

Black or dark gray in color.  Cutting Speed: 4,000 to 6,500 S.F.P.M.  Wheels shipped ready to use Wheels should be indicated within .0005" T.I.R. prior to grinding. May be trued with nibs designed for super abrasives followed by a dressing stick
VITRIFIED/METAL BOND

Gray in color,  Cutting Speed: 1,000 to 3,000 S.F.P.M. Cannot be conventionally trued, wheels shipped ready to use Wheels should be indicated within .0005" T.I.R. prior to grinding Vitrified/Metal bond wheels are capable of providing superior performance at low R.P.M.'s

METAL BOND

Bronze or gold in color Cutting Speed: 4,000 to 6,000 S.F.P.M. Cannot be conventionally trued, wheels shipped ready to use. Wheels should be indicated within .0005" T.I.R. prior to grinding .  Metal bond wheels are excellent where form and edge retention are essential. Metal bond CBN wheels maybe used for the grinding of hardened steels where form retention is critical. Metal bond is exclusively used in our precision core drills. This bond is hard extending tool life but needing more grinding pressure.

ELECTROPLATED

Metallic gray to shiny silver in color.  Cutting Speed: 4,000 to 6,000 S.F.P.M.   Single layer plated products cannot be trued.  Wheels should be indicated within .0005" T.I.R. prior to grinding   Plated wheels are very aggressive grinding wheels and are especially suited for certain types of form grinding. For jig and internal grinding, Abrasive exposure can be as high as 60 percent resulting in a free-cutting cool grinding wheel.

BRA-Z DIAMOND

Metallic to shiny silver in color.  Cutting Speed: 4,000 to 6,000 S.F.P.M.   Single layer Brazed products cannot be trued.  Wheels should be indicated within .0005" T.I.R. prior to grinding. Grit sizes available are 20-150 grit only.  Braemar "BRA-Z"  products offers a free cutting, long lasting, and fast stock removal rate.  With  maximum abrasive exposure of the abrasive grains as well as controlled distribution of the abrasive particles providing maximum cutting abilities and abrasive usage.
